Student welfare at the UFSC: socioeconomic profile of assisted students between 2019 and 2023

Abstract

This study aimed to identify the socioeconomic profile of students assisted by student welfare at the Federal University of Santa Catarina in the years 2019, 2021, 2022, and 2023. The research encompassed socioeconomic data related to the mode of university entrance, race, income profile, and gender. The study follows the methodological path of quantitative research, being descriptive in its purpose. Data analysis revealed a reduction in the total number of registered students, from 4,213 in 2019 to 3,279 in 2023. Most students registered with Prae entered the university through public school quotas with an income of up to 1.5 minimum wages and self-identified as white. The income range of R$3 00.01 to R$ 1.000.00 includes the largest number of students registered with Prae. The results indicated a slight predominance of female students over the studied years. These findings enhance the understanding of the socioeconomic dynamics influencing student retention in higher education, serving as a basis for future research and public policy formulation.

Professor in the Department of Administrative Sciences at the Federal University of Santa Catarina. PhD in Knowledge Engineering and Management - UFSC (2010). Master's (2007) and Bachelor's (2005) degrees in Administration from the Federal University of Santa Catarina. Professor in the Graduate Program in Administration and the Graduate Program in University Administration. Coordinator of the Academy and LINC Digital projects. Experienced in the field of Administration, with an emphasis on University Management. Distance education and Materials Management, focusing mainly on the following topics: dropout rates, alumni, evaluation, entrepreneurship, inventories, and procurement. Participant in the INPEAU - Institute for Research and Studies in University Administration and NEOGAP - Center for Studies and Observation of Management, Learning, and People research groups.
