Child consumer deprivations: a study of children in relative poverty

Abstract

The objective of this article is to analyze the material deprivations of child consumption in the context of relative poverty, in order to identify the deprivations experienced by children and to characterize the implications of and strategies for coping with these deprivations. In this empirical research, 23 children and their respective relatives were interviewed, totaling 46 interviewees. To collect data, a design technique was also employed through the production of a drawing by the child to support the interviews. The results indicate that children suffer deprivations related to health, education and housing. Deprivations concerning entertainment and toys were found more frequently. As a result of deprivation, children suffer emotional and social consequences, tackled through emotional reorientation.

Mayara Muniz de Oliveira é mestre em Administração pelo Programa de Pós-Graduação em Administração (PPGA) da Universidade Federal da Paraíba (UFPB) na linha de pesquisa Marketing e Sociedade (2016). Graduada em Administração pela Universidade Federal de Campina Grande (UFCG/UACC/CCJS) Campus de Sousa (CRA-PB 1-5346). Professora na Universidade Estadual do Rio Grande do Norte (UERN) Curso de Administração. Reside na cidade de Sousa – PB.

Rita de Cássia de Faria Pereira é doutora Graduado em Administração (Marketing & Estratégia) pela Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS) e Bacharelado em Ciências. e M.Sc. graduados em Administração de Empresas pela Universidade Federal da Paraíba (UFPB), Brasil. Foi professora assistente de Marketing no Departamento de Administração da Universidade Federal de Santa Maria (UFSM) e professora assistente de Marketing do Departamento de Administração da Pontifícia Universidade Católica do Rio Grande do Sul (PUCRS). Atualmente trabalha na UFPB como professora associada de Marketing no Departamento de Administração, membro do corpo docente da Graduate School of Management (PPGA) e membro do corpo docente da Graduate School of Learning Organizations (MPGOA). Na UFPB, ela também foi chefe do Departamento de Administração e diretora do PPGA duas vezes. É pesquisadora chefe do Grupo de Pesquisa em Marketing, Consumo e Sociedade e membro do Grupo de Pesquisa em Tecnologia da Informação e Sociedade (GTIS) - ambos credenciados pelo Conselho Nacional de Pesquisa (CNPq). Seus trabalhos apareceram em mais de 20 periódicos, como RAUSP, RAC, RBGN, RPBG, REAd, Jornal de Gestão Global de TI, TI e Pessoas, Computadores em Comportamento Humano, Revista Internacional de Capital Humano e Profissionais de TI, e International Journal. de Engenharia de Software e Engenharia do Conhecimento. Seus interesses de pesquisa atuais incluem redes sociais virtuais, marketing de relacionamento e marketing e sociedade.

Rita de Cássia de Faria Pereira holds a Ph.D. degree in Management (Marketing & Strategy) earned from Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS) and B.Sc. and M.Sc. degrees in Business Administration earned from Federal University of Paraíba (UFPB), Brazil. She was an assistant professor of Marketing at the Department of Management at Federal University of Santa Maria (UFSM) and an assistant professor of Marketing at the Department of Management at Pontifical Catholic University of Rio Grande do Sul (PUCRS). She currently works at UFPB as an associate professor of Marketing at the Department of Management, a faculty member of the Graduate School of Management (PPGA), and a faculty member of the Graduate School of Learning Organizations (MPGOA). At UFPB, she has been also head of the Department of Management and director of PPGA twice. She is chief researcher of the Marketing, Consumption & Society Research Group, and a member of the Information Technology & Society Research Group (GTIS) - both accredited by the Brazilian Research Council (CNPq). Her works appeared in 20+ peer-reviewed journals, such as RAUSP, RAC, RBGN, RPBG, REAd, Journal of Global IT Management, IT & People, Computers in Human Behavior, International Journal of Human Capital & IT Professionals, and International Journal of Software Engineering & Knowledge Engineering. Her current research interests include virtual social networks, relationship marketing, and marketing & society.
