Abstract

The objective with this paper was to evaluate the water quality, and relate it to the infrastructure conditions of selected shallow wells in five sectors of Anastacio - State of Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil. We evaluated the wells’ quality of water by the Most Probable Number (NMP.100 mL-1) for total coliforms, and fecal coliforms (both by Multiple Tubes), chloride, total hardness, and total alkalinity (titration), pH, and electrical conductivity (electrometric). The high percentage of samples with presence of bacteria, the chloride concentrations above the Maximum Allowed Value, and high electrical conductivity in water may stem from the inefficiency of the sanitary system of the city, and in the absence of guidance from the public regarding the health risks of the population consuming untreated water captured in shallow wells.
