Abstract

This research aimed to analyze and identify/catalog the occurrence of events associated with rains in the city of Jacobina, Bahia, through the analysis of newspapers from the 20th and 21st centuries. This work is based on a scientific initiation research carried out in 2023. The study of the history of these events over time in Jacobina, Bahia is important, as it leads us to understand how these phenomena impacted the city and the population. In this research, a qualitative approach was used, the methodology adopted involved bibliographic research for theoretical conceptualization of the phenomena and documentary research, and the methodological procedures subdivided into 4 stages, being the literature review; the analysis of the newspapers, followed by the systematization of the data in a table and finally the presentation of the results. The results demonstrated that much of the damage and losses caused by the phenomena resulting from the rains were the floods of the Itapicuru Mirim and Rio do Ouro rivers, and certain situations of overflowing of the same, causing floods and flash floods. Thus, it is stated that the problems regarding the phenomena and damages that occurred arose and still arise from incipient territorial planning and organization and socio-environmental public policy to deal with events of this nature.
