Abstract

The municipality of Santo Amaro, located in the intermediate region of São Luís, immediate region of Barreirinhas. It is limited to the north by the Atlantic Ocean, to the east by the municipality of Barreirinhas, to the west by the municipality of Primeira Cruz, and to the south by the municipality of Barreirinhas. It stands out for its national tourist importance due to the local natural attributes represented by the set of lush beaches, lakes, and lagoons, which also provide other services to the community, such as fishing. Given the growing tourism market, valuing local activities is essential as a way of maintaining the sustainability of activities carried out by local communities. The present work aimed to characterize fishing activity and the profile of the fishing community in the region, focusing efforts on the municipality's headquarters and the village of Travosa. Data collection was carried out using semi-structured questionnaires. The information obtained indicates the close relationship between the subsistence activities of these populations and the sustainability of fishing resources, which constitutes a strong indicator of the need for actions to maintain and/or improve local socioeconomic characteristics. The records highlighted in the interviews show a progressive reduction in the number of fishermen who see the art of fishing as based on the family basis and passed from father to son, due to the difficulties associated with the development of the activity that tend to alienate new generations.

Carla Carolina Ferreira Caldas, Universidade Federal do Maranhão

Graduating in Oceanography.

Antonio Carlos Leal de Castro, Universidade Federal do Maranhão

He has a degree in Agronomic Engineering from the Federação das Escolas Superiores do Maranhão (1977), a master's degree in Environmental Engineering Sciences from the University of São Paulo (1991) and a doctorate in Environmental Engineering Sciences from the University of São Paulo (1994). He is currently Professor Emeritus at the Federal University of Maranhão, in the Department of Oceanography and Limnology. He has experience in Ecology, with an emphasis on Applied Ecology, working mainly on the following subjects: Fish Population Dynamics, Fish Biology and Ecology, Numerical Ecology and Fisheries Resources. He also works in the area of Integrated Environmental Assessment, with an emphasis on environmental impacts, planning and monitoring, and in the area of Environmental Quality and Sustainability, with an emphasis on environmental health and sanitation indicators. He is a permanent lecturer in the Graduate Programs in Development and Environment (Master's and Doctorate) and Health and Environment (Master's).
