Urbanization and sustainable development: an overview of brazilian states

The relationship between urbanization and Sustainable Local Development (SLD), especially in developing countries, constitutes a complex situation, whose understanding requires the analysis of a set of factors and variables. This article’s main objective is to analyze the relationship between urbanization and local sustainable development in Brazilian states. For this, a set of key variables was taken into account, such as social, economic, political-institutional and environmental variables, whose data were collected in different official databases at the level of Brazilian municipalities, but whose representation and analysis are at the level of federation units, to characterize SLD and its relationship with urbanization. The results confirm states in the Southeast, South and Midwest as the most urbanized and that present better economic opportunities and living conditions, due to agglomeration economies, but also with environmental and public security challenges. It is concluded that there is a positive relationship between SLD and urbanization, although in a context of high inequality.
