Abstract

This paper offers an analysis of the word MINACCIA “threat”, a key-word for the study of discourse related to intimidation. The term refers to the practice (known from ancient times) of inducing fear in the addressee. Based mostly on primary sources, the paper reconstructs the history of the term by exploring both learned and popular traditions and including data about the family of words related to MINACCIA. The paper aims to contribute to the research in this field by highlighting some of the defining features of the word, pointing out semantic variants and invariants.
