Abstract

This experience report describes the university extension activity carried out in two community vegetable gardens linked to solidarity kitchens in Morro da Cruz, Porto Alegre, with the aim of strengthening food security and promoting community autonomy. The action involved UFRGS students who worked with the community on activities such as technical support in the management of the vegetable gardens. The project demonstrated the importance of urban agriculture as a tool for food security and social transformation, while also reinforcing the role of the University. The extension activities provided both technical and social learning for the students, contributing to the development of transformative agents. The work highlights the potential of university extension to promote autonomy and food security in vulnerable urban areas, emphasizing the importance of interdisciplinarity, community participation, and the appreciation of traditional knowledge.
