Peer Counseling Project in Higher Education: mental health care experiences during the COVID-19 pandemic

This work consists of an experience report on a peer counseling extension project in higher education, developed at a federal public university during the suspension of face-to-face activities due to the COVID-19 pandemic. 19 conversation circles were held with university students from October 2020 to May 2021, with the aim of identifying pre-existing demands, promoting mental health and contributing to the development of institutional actions that favor a healthy environment for development and learning . It was found that peer counseling conversations constitute a viable welcoming strategy to be carried out within a university, and can be developed as a tool to help students face their adversities, providing skills for problem solving and promoting mental health during the academic trajectory.
