IF-SAMBA: Tuning out prejudices, valuing afor culture in Serra Gaúcha

Abstract

This experience report is about a music teaching project that aimed to enrich the musical, social, and historical understanding of Afro-Brazilian culture through the aspects of samba, with actions that aimed at recognizing the artistic and cultural manifestations of marginalized identity groups throughout history. Carried out from May to November 2023, the project’s methodological path was to carry out bibliographic and documentary research on samba, offer musical workshops on percussion and guitar, as well as partnership actions with the Afro Essência dance group from Nova Prata, RS, Brazil. The results were presented at IFRS Câmpus Veranópolis, at the 6th Teaching, Research, and Extension Exhibition of IFRS Câmpus Veranópolis (6th MEPE), with a script that interspersed history, music, and dance as a pedagogical resource, revisiting black memories. The importance of pedagogical actions that prioritize the recognition and appreciation of the culture of black people for a more just and egalitarian society is highlighted.

Master's student in Museology and Heritage at the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS). Librarian at the Federal Institute of Education, Science and Technology of Rio Grande do Sul - Veranópolis Campus. Specialist in Memory and Collections from the Signorelli International Faculty (FISIG). Bachelor's degree in Library Science from the Faculty of Library Science and Communication (Fabico) of the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS). Technician in Library Science from the Federal Institute of Education, Science and Technology of Rio Grande do Sul (IFRS).

Gabriel Abreu Mussato, Instituto Federal de Educação, Ciência e Tecnologia do Rio Grande do Sul

Holds a Bachelor's degree in Physics from the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (2006), a Master's degree in Education from the University of Caxias do Sul (2013), and a PhD in Science and Mathematics Education from PUCRS (2018). Professor at EBTT - IFRS - Veranópolis Advanced Campus since 2020.

She holds a degree in Letters with a specialization in Spanish Language from the University of Caxias do Sul (2010), a Bachelor's degree in Letters from the University of Caxias do Sul (2005), and a Master's degree in Letters and Culture from the University of Caxias do Sul (2008). Currently, she is a lecturer/technologist in analysis and development at the Federal Institute of Education, Science and Technology of Rio Grande do Sul, a lecturer/technologist in management processes at the Federal Institute of Education, Science and Technology of Rio Grande do Sul, a lecturer in technical courses in administration and information technology at the Federal Institute of Education, Science and Technology of Rio Grande do Sul, and extension coordinator at the Veranópolis campus of the Federal Institute of Education, Science and Technology of Rio Grande do Sul, working mainly on the following themes: binational courses, language teaching, Italian immigration, culture, and borders.
