Methods for use in the characterization of the diametric distribution of the tocantins Cerrado

The “inverted-J” characteristic, which refers to the tendency of the diameter distribution (d.d.) of native forests, is widely used to guide forestry management. Therefore, the objective of this study was to evaluate the d.d. generated through different empirical and statistical methods in a 30.0-ha fragment of Cerrado stricto sensu. To this end, a forest inventory was conducted with five rectangular plots of 1,000.0 m² each, representing, on average, 6.0 ha of forest per plot. The evaluation criteria adopted were graphical analysis of the tendency of an “inverted-J” and the results of fitting three regression models, considering: significance in the estimated coefficients, coefficient of determination, residual standard error (RSE), and residual plots. The method that stood out in the development of d.d. was used to fit the Weibull and Sb-Johnson probability distributions, which were evaluated by the Kolmogorov-Smirnov (K-S) test. It was concluded that using fixed diameter classes of 5,0 cm, combined with the nonlinear fit, is more appropriate to characterize the negative exponential curve with an RSE of 12.5 trees/ha, better than the respective linear fit with an RSE of 24.1 trees/ha. Regarding the probability distributions, better adherence to the observed data of the d.d. of Tocantins cerrado was obtained by applying the Sb-Johnson function with dn = 0.0091ns, being 50.5% lower than the value obtained by the Weibull distribution (dn = 0.0137ns).

Authors: Authors should present an objective discussion of the significance of research work as well as sufficient detail and references to permit others to replicate the experiments. Review Articles should also be objective, comprehensive, and accurate accounts of the state of the art. The Authors should ensure that their work is entirely original works, and if the work and/or words of others have been used, this has been appropriately acknowledged. Plagiarism in all its forms constitutes unethical publishing behavior and is unacceptable. Submitting the same manuscript to more than one journal concurrently constitutes unethical publishing behavior and is unacceptable. Authors should not submit articles describing essentially the same research to more than one journal. Editors: Editors should evaluate manuscripts exclusively on the basis of their academic merit.
