Abstract

One should not underestimate the significance of June 17, 1953 for the literature of the former German Democratic Republic (GDR). Most authors active at the time spoke out in relation to the violent repression of the workers' movement. So also the German writer Bertolt Brecht (1898-1956). The effect that the poem “Der Rauch” (The smoke), written by him at the time of the construction of the regime and as a reaction to the events of June 17th, can still have on the reader today, is the subject of this work. Theoretical basis is sought in the literary theory of the GDR, which turned to the aesthetics of reception from the 70s onwards.
