Self-awareness, Arthur Schopenhauer, Friedrich Schelling, Jacob BöhmeAbstract
In modern philosophy, there are three significant and influential philosophies of the will. The best known is Schopenhauer’s metaphysics of the will. Schelling’s philosophy is viewed more from the perspective of the culmination of German Idealism. Both draw upon Jacob Böhme, the philosophus teutonicus and “first German philosopher,” as Hegel put it in his History of Philosophy. A look at Schopenhauer’s relationship to Böhme can shed new light on his reluctantly acknowledged affinity with Schelling, whom he studied thoroughly during the genesis of his system. The aim of this article is to examine this “trinity.”
It starts with a detailed, chronological account of Schopenhauer’s readings of Böhme. This is followed by an explanation of the significance of “self-awareness” in the work of Jacob Böhme. Schopenhauer’s 1817 summary of his doctrine takes on new contours against this “mystical” backdrop. The concluding brief reference to Schelling completes this picture, as Schelling’s 1809 treatise on the Essence of Human Freedom was significantly influenced by Jacob Böhme’s work.
