What is a dream, what relation does it have to reality, how can one differentiate between them, and finally, what makes it possible in the first place? This is the kind of question a dream theory should answer. Some lines about it were once found in the 1813 work on the principle of sufficient reason, but Schopenhauer abandoned his original thesis over the following decades. This paper aims to highlight Schopenhauer’s changing mind over time and to point out a set of problems left behind without a solution. Also includes a translation into Portuguese for the Diss. § 22.
