Freud’s theory in Beyond the Pleasure Principle presents a series of stalemates, many of which are not resolver in his subsequent work either. In particular, his hypotheses on the opposition between the two classes of drives and on the regressive character of the life drives show inconsistencies that weaken the theory of the second drive duality. In this article, a step-by-step analysis of the main ideas formulated in this text is carried out with the objective of discussing some of these remaining unresolved issues, as well as indicating how earlier Freudian concepts are brought back at this point. It is argued that part of the problems in Freud’s argument are due to the fact that the basic assumptions on which all his metapsychological theory is based are not easily compatible with some of the main concepts of the second drive duality.Downloads
