Hegemony and Antagonism
Reflections on the Dispute over the Meaning of Childbirth

This paper reflects on the hegemonic construction of the medicalization of childbirth in contemporary societies, drawing on the post-foundational theory of Ernesto Laclau and Chantal Mouffe, in dialogue with other related authors. The process of medicalization is examined from a feminist perspective and through women’s health studies that have critically analyzed it. The article argues that the hegemony of the medicalized discourse is built and reinforced through the expansion of its nodal points and discursive boundaries, its articulation with prevailing ideologies in different contexts, and the incorporation of elements from alternative discourses as an internal difference within the system of meaning, thereby weakening its critical potential. Emphasis is placed on the importance of considering the affective component to understand its hegemonic power. Finally, the paper reflects on the contributions of this theory for approaching medicine as a knowledge discourse.
