Dilemmas in Fieldwork, Ethics, and Malaise

Based on a situation narrated through fieldwork in a Black quilombola community, we seek to problematize issues involving ethics, culture, local politics, and social science research. To this end, we reflect on William Foote Whyte's work, Street Corner Society, first published in the United States in 1943. We believe that some of the experiences narrated in this book lead us to reflect on our own experiences of immersion in fieldwork. We briefly examine two excerpts that relate more directly to ethical-political dilemmas in researcher-community relationships, postulating that there are no easy solutions to them and highlighting the structural constraints that permeate such relationships. Finally, we revisit the notion of sociological Machiavellianism expressed by Peter Berger, which expresses the possibility of a rational ethics that reconciles a cynical worldview of society with an ethical-political commitment to the groups we study.
