“AGRO” – THE NODAL POINT OF THE DISCOURSE FOR "ONE AGRICULTURE"

This article employs the Discourse Theory of Ernesto Laclau and Chantal Mouffe to analyze the growing hegemony of the "One Agriculture" discourse in the Brazilian political context. The analysis reveals how the discursive logic of rural patronage spokespeople influences the political arena, adapting to also represent family farming actors. The "One Agriculture" discourse began to gain strength during the Workers' Party governments and became hegemonic with the rise of liberal and authoritarian-oriented governments, strengthened by right-wing populism. The diffusion of this discourse was significantly driven by agriculture ministers and agribusiness leaders, many of them linked to institutions like the CNA and the FPA. The research observed that this discourse produced significant institutional changes, reflecting and shaping public policies and the organization of institutions. Understanding the articulatory practice of the "One Agriculture" discourse requires a deeper analysis of the antagonistic discourses produced by different agribusiness coalitions. The application of Discourse Theory provides valuable insights for policymakers, allowing a more holistic understanding of the interests and power dynamics in the agricultural sector.
