Abstract

Credit unions are expanding their Cooperative Service Centers (PACs), reaching regions where traditional banks have no commercial interest, while the latter have been reducing their branches. In this context, this study aimed to understand how the expansion of Cooperative Service Centers (PACs) is being reflected in the Income Statement (DRE) of Brazilian credit unions. The Wilcoxon and Median Difference tests were used to compare the financial performance of cooperatives that expanded in relation to those that stagnated or reduced their service points. The period analyzed was from 2016 to 2023, totaling 1,021 cooperatives with data available on the website of the Central Bank of Brazil. It was found that cooperatives that expanded their PACs showed significant growth in operating income and greater financial stability, with smaller variations in net surpluses compared to cooperatives that kept their PACs stagnant or reduced them. The expansion proved effective in attracting new members and diversifying services, contributing to increased revenue and the stability of credit unions.
