Oral health promotion practices for pregnant women in Primary Health Care: an integrative review

Abstract

Aims: Primary Health Care is characterized as the environment that should offer pregnant women education and dental care services. Therefore, the study aimed to investigate which practices of oral health promotion for pregnant women performed in Primary Health Care. Methods: This is an integrative review based on the research question "What are the practices of oral health promotion for pregnant women in Primary Health Care?". The search took place in May 2022 in the databases Medline, LILACS, BDENF, IBECS, Scopus and Web of Science and in the academic search engine Science Direct. The articles were extracted and exported to Rayyan. The information taken from the articles were organized in spreadsheets and tables. Results: The sample consisted of five studies, which were published between 2017 and 2022. All articles were published in English, and 80% (n=4) were conducted in Asia, were randomized clinical trials and were classified with level of evidence I. The publications cited as oral health promotion practices individual and family counseling, demonstration of brushing with fluoride; guidelines with the aid of educational booklet, group meetings and orientations through daily text messages. Final considerations: It is concluded that oral health promotion practices for pregnant women in primary health care contribute to the dissemination of information and, consequently, to the change of behaviors in oral health care.
