Determinants of health related to substance abuse and drug addiction in rural population: integrative review

Abuse or dependence on alcohol and other drugs represents important risk factors for the health of the world's population. In fact, the prevalence of substance-related disorders in rural areas has been the subject of epidemiological studies. The aim of this study was to identify and analyze the health determinants associated with drug abuse and dependence in the rural population. This is an integrative literature review. Of the 785 articles identified, 53 publications were considered eligible for full reading, of which 27 were included in the final selection. The analysis resulted in the organization of thematic categories according to the modalities of the social determinants of the model proposed by Dahlgren and Whitehead: individual determinants, proximal social determinants, intermediate social determinants and distal social determinants. The most prevalent health determinants in the articles were intermediate social determinants, such as marital status, social and family relationships, and social and community networks. The lack of Latin American and South American articles that relates social determinants of health to drug abuse showed the need to promote research in this direction, especially in Brazil, since this perspective is extremely important for the elaboration of public policies that reduce health inequalities.
