Correlation between leukogram and ulcerated periodontal surface area (PISA)

Abstract

Objective: The objective of this study was to correlate the impact of the periodontal condition, evaluated through PISA, with the white blood cell count (WBCC). Methods: Full clinical periodontal exam (CPE) and laboratory tests were collected in a representative sample of a rural area in the interior of Rio Grande do Sul. 649 individuals were evaluated (≥18 years) and classified into three groups: Group 1 (n = 522), dentate patients with CPE and WBCC. Group 2 (n = 59), edentulous patients with WBCC. Group 3 (n = 68), patients with only CPE. Correlation between periodontal condition (healthy, mild, moderate and severe periodontitis) and white cell count (total of leukocytes, neutrophils and lymphocytes) was evaluated. PISA was calculated through the clinical insertion level (NIC), probing depth (PS) and bleeding on probing (SS). Results: Group 1 when compared to the others presented higher values for NIC (p <0.05) and lymphocytes (p <0.05). A small correlation between PISA and total WBCC (ρ = 0.13, p <0.05) and PISA and neutrophils (ρ = 0.12; p <0.05) were observed in group 1. Subjects with mild periodontitis presented a large correlation between PISA and total WBCC (ρ = 0.67, p <0.05) and PISA and neutrophils (ρ = 0.72, p <0.05). A small correlation was observed for PISA and total WBCC in healthy subjects (ρ = 0.27, p <0.05), PISA and lymphocytes (ρ = 0.17, p <0.05) in moderate periodontitis and PISA and neutrophils (ρ = 0.15, p <0.05) for severe periodontitis. Final considerations: Although with a small correlation, the inflammatory status associated with periodontal diseases has a systemic repercussion observed on WBCC.
