Abstract

Objective: This study aims to evaluate the antimicrobial potential of essential oils from Eucalyptus globulus and Citrus sinensis against Aeromonas hydrophila, one of the microorganisms that is related to infections in fish. Methods: Disk diffusion tests were performed with 10 µl of essential oils against the inoculum of A. hydrophila on the McFarland 0.5 scale, in addition to the Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) through the microdilution technique in 96-well plates and the Bactericide Minimum Concentration (MBC) by removing an aliquot of the MIC from each oil and inoculating into a plate containing the Mueller-Hinton medium. Results: Mean inhibition halos in triplicate were 17 mm with E. globulus essential oil and 25.7 mm with C. sinensis essential oil, in addition to a MIC of 5.758 µg / ml (w/v) with the essential oil of E. globulus and 330.7 µg / ml with the essential oil of C. sinensis, in addition to CBM of 5.758 µg / ml (w/v) with the essential oil of E. globulus and 2645 µg / ml (w/v) with the essential oil of C. sinensis against A. hydrophila. Conclusion: E. globulus and C. sinensis essential oils have antimicrobial potential against A. hydrophila bacteria, and can be used in fish farming, reducing bacterial contamination of animals and subsequent human contamination through the consumption of their meat.
