Abstract

Objective: To evaluate the respiratory muscle performance of physically active elderly people practicing ground and water exercise modalities. Methods: Cross-sectional study, including 30 elderly people divided equally into two groups, the aquatic activity (GA) and terrestrial activity (GT) group. Anthropometric data (height, weight, and BMI), pulmonary function by spirometry (FEV1, FVC and FEV1 / FVC), respiratory muscle endurance with Power Breath K5 (S-Index, SIMP and exhaustion), and physical activity levels through two questionnaires (IPAQ and QBMI). In addition, data were expressed as mean and standard deviation, and statistical tests (Shapiro-Wilk; Student’s t; Pearson’s correlation) were performed using software R, version 3.5.2, was adopted. significance of p≤0.05. Results: Differences were identified only in the parameters weight, BMI and exhaustion means of the studied groups (p≤0.05). Conclusion: Respiratory muscle endurance of older people who practice water activities is more effective than those who do only land activities.
