History and meaning of Huichol art and crafts

The objective of this research paper is to investigate the origins of Huichol art, its evolution, and its current significance, as well as the meaning of the crafts of this indigenous group settled in the Sierra Madre Occidental of Mexico. To this end, the following topics are addressed: a) the possible origin of Huichol art in the solar cult of the ancient Nayarit Indians, b) changes in Huichol clothing, c) ritual art: the meaning of votive objects that the Huichol offer to their gods in sacred places, d) the emergence of new Huichol artistic productions: yarn paintings and beadwork panels, e) the difference between an authentic Huichol artwork and a copy, f) the meaning of Huichol crafts and its commercialization in the capitalist economy.
