The far right and the internationalization of exclusionary discourses

Abstract

This article aims to analyze how the rise of the far right in Italian politics and the second term of Donald Trump’s administration in the United States have contributed to the legitimation and diffusion of discriminatory discourses in the international arena. The analysis focuses on the impacts of these narratives on migration-related issues, political debate, and the global public sphere, with particular emphasis on their implications for human rights and multilateralism. The relevance of this study lies in its engagement with contemporary global political dynamics. Situated within the field of International Relations, particularly International Politics, the research adopts a qualitative approach grounded in the hypothetical-deductive method and developed through a comparative case study. The central hypothesis posits that the far right legitimizes and disseminates discursive practices that undermine democratic values and international protection norms. The methodology combines bibliographic review with content and discourse analysis, identifying recurring elements in political and media discourses that reinforce discriminatory patterns. The theoretical framework draws on the works of Alexander Wendt and Michel Foucault, who address, respectively, constructivism and the meaning of “discourse”, as well as Cas Mudde, who conceptualizes the term “far right.”. The findings are expected to contribute to a deeper understanding of the mechanisms through which prejudice is legitimized in the international order and its effects on human rights and multilateral cooperation.
