Taiwan: the difficulties of international recognition

Abstract

Taiwan, an island located in East Asia, is facing impasses in international relations, mainly in the face of Chinese hegemony, which does not recognize its independence. The objective of the research is to analyze Taiwan’s state recognition and its strategies for international projection through partnerships with global organizations and networks in the 21st century. The research involves an analysis of international relations and state law, Taiwan’s quest for recognition in a scenario marked by the influence of the People’s Republic of China (PRC). The research method is deductive and exploratory, with a case study approach, using primary and secondary sources, including news, newspapers, and scientific articles. The non-recognition of sovereignty by the UN, emerging states, and political powers such as the United States interferes with Taiwan’s foreign relations. The research identifies that Taiwan has become a focal point of tension in international politics, especially in light of the PRC’s attempts to reaffirm its sovereignty over the island. Taiwan has invested in partnerships with international and regional non-governmental organizations, standing out in the defense of democratic values, human rights, and sustainability. Collaboration with these networks provides a platform to project its international identity, even without formal recognition.
