Participation and Legitimacy in Democratic Models: the debate between C. Pateman and J. Schumpeter

Emphasizing the relationship between participation and legitimacy in two distinct conceptions of democracy, this study reinterprets the democratic debate between C. Pateman and J. Schumpeter. Schumpeter conceptualized the population as irrational and highly influenced when acting in the political sphere, delegitimizing the direct participation of citizens in democracies. C. Pateman conceptualized a model with institutions and individuals articulated together for the pedagogical-political development of citizens. In order to carry out this study and understand the theoretical assumptions of the thinkers, we perform an interpretation of both theories in their intellectual and historical contexts.
