Censors eye: the historian Juan Pivel Devoto as censor of the Collection of Uruguayan Classics (1959-1982)

In 1953 the Uruguayan State began to publish a series of books, the Uruguayan Classics Collection (Artigas Library), which attempted to lay the foundations for national cultural citizenship. From the beginning of the project, the official state historian Juan Pivel Devoto was commissioned to take charge of aspects dedicated to the edition, selection of authors, books and prologuists.
Consequently, this article works with an essential aspect within any editorial project with canonical pretensions: censorship. We will present three cases that involve two forms of censorship: the one directed towards the authors that it was intended to edit, and the one sustained against the different prologuists in charge of presenting an acceptable view for the works chosen by their editor Pivel.
