Teaching tools in extension: environmental education and cultural valorization

Abstract

This paper presents the development and impacts of educational tools produced in UFVJM’s extension projects, aiming to integrate environmental education and cultural appreciation. Materials such as almanacs, booklets, videos, and photographic records were created, addressing environmental and cultural themes like the preservation of native Cerrado species and the tradition of ox carts. The distribution of these materials during community and school events, including the “Festa da Moagem e do Carro de Bois”, expanded the reach of these actions, promoting environmental awareness and strengthening local cultural identity. The actions resulted in greater community participation in activities, increased awareness of the importance of preserving native species, and the documentation of cultural practices that were at risk of being forgotten. In addition, the projects contributed to the development of academic skills in students, such as scientific communication and instructional design. Despite logistical challenges, the project demonstrated the transformative potential of university extension in promoting sustainability and community engagement. The continuity of these initiatives can deepen social and environmental impacts, reinforcing the university’s role as an agent of change.
