The role of the State and its relations with the market in the development of capitalists economies

This paper aims to discussthe role of the state in the capitalist economies and their relations with the market in promoting social and economic development. Will be presented the main aspects about the evolution of the roles assumed by the State starting from the emergence of the liberal state, based on the defense of the free operation of market forces and minimum state action, through the predominance period of state intervention, characteristic of the Welfare State, until the emergence of neoliberal ideology. It concludes that, despite the generalization of neoliberal ideas, state intervention is needed to promote economic dynamism and reduce social inequalities.
