Invented worlds: autism spectrum disorder and the creative process of imaginary habitats and creatures

Abstract

Art has the power to transport us to unknown worlds, challenging the conventions of reality and expanding the limits of imagination. This article investigates the poetic work of XXXXXXXXXXXX, an artist with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), and highlights the role of hyperfocus and imaginary in the creation of sculptures and installations that explore the idea of invented worlds. In this context, the research poses the question: how can the hyperfocus and imaginary in ASD be a creative tool for the production of contemporary art? Using concepts of aesthetics, poietics and possible worlds, such as those of Luigi Pareyson, René Passeron, Cecilia Salles and Marina Bethonico, as well as artistic influences from Walmor Corrêa and Lygia Clark, artworks from the XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX series are examined, their creative process and how they instigate the viewer to participate in subjective and interactive visual narratives, highlighting the potential of art to transform ordinary into extraordinary.
