Abstract

http://dx.doi.org/10.5902/2179460X13190

The knowledge about Riograndean flora has shown high advances during the last twenty years, if compared to the whole period, between the former field works done by the scientific travelers, in the XIX century, and the great botanists founders of many important herbaria and botanical gardens, in southern Brazil, in the last half of the XX century. In the last twenty years, we observed that the international movements for nature conservancy, besides the global articulate net efforts, with the computers help, digital photograph, on line data banks and internet, were capable to give conditions to build a flora knowledge that we have never seen yet. The goal of this article is to discuss about the role of scientific collections (herbaria, botanical gardens) on the Riograndean Flora conservation. In addition, we intend to discuss how to improve and extend these collections to collaborate effectively in this process, especially in the case of the herbarium and the botanical garden of UFSM.
