The Use of Framing Theory in Analyzing the Role of Journalism in Reporting the Death of Journalist Dom Phillips

Abstract

This study aims to examine the role of journalism in periods of environmental crisis, specifically in the context of the state of Amazonas, in the Northern region of Brazil, where environmental issues have received greater media attention, as evidenced by the recent deaths of the indigenous activist Bruno da Cunha Araújo Pereira and the British journalist Dom Phillips near the Cachoeira Community in Atalaia do Norte. Using the Framing Theory proposed by Robert Entman (1993), this research adopts the phenomenological method, bibliographical analysis, and interviews to understand the framing provided by journalists, specifically Eliane Brum and Alícia Lobato from the Amazônia Real Portal, in an article published on June 15, 2022, titled "Dom and Bruno were shot dead, Pelado confesses", during a period of increased conflicts in the region. Additionally, the analysis considers the circulation of meanings to examine society's perceptions of the issue. The theoretical framework is based on authors such as Trigueiro (2005), Gondim (2007), Travancas (2011), Ferreira (2016), among others. The results highlight the presence of critical frameworks in the management of environmental policy in the region, demonstrating the practice of environmental journalism.
