Abstract

The great historical catastrophes can generate either silence or falsification or testimony. This third possibility is doubly valued. It offers a public witness that allows an undecidable or forbidden truth to erupt onto the social scene and, therefore, has a cathartic function. The author of the testimony frees himself from the weight of horror.
