Abstract

This work aims at showing that the violence presented in Capão Pecado, a novel written by Ferréz, means a disbelief in the humanistic project of modernity as first conceived in the nineteenth century. In order to do so, this paper will analyze the main character of the novel mainly at those moments when violence takes place. Also, the notions of imperialism, exile and diaspora conceived by Edward Said and Gayatri Spivak, together with the newly developed “dialectics of marginality”, a critical approach formulated by João Cezar Castro Rocha, will be fundamental in determining how and why this disbelief in modernity takes place in the novel.
