Abstract

This Article deals with the work The Sleepwalkers (1932), by Hermann Broch. It intends to explore aesthetic aspects contained in it that reveal knowledge about the human condition in the context of the First World War. Based on Milan Kundera's discussion of the write of novels, we intend to outline how this issue is treated as an ontological hypothesis in The Sleepwalkers, guiding the conflict that reflects on the nature and decadence of Western values in times of war. From Broch's theory on the decay of values, it is possible to understand how Germany opened up to the Nazi authoritarian system. To contemplate this reflection, the investigation proposed here is guided by the theory of Epistemology of Romance, based on the dialogue between philosophy and literature
