Abstract

This essay analyzes the monster in the novel O cheiro do ralo, by Lourenço Mutarelli, through the identification of elements that comprises the configuration of such creatures – such as habitat, impurity, power, pleasure and freedom. The monster is a cultural construction, a device to establish borders between permitted and prohibited practices, between order and chaos, between us and them. In this narrative, the monstrousness of the protagonist is linked to the way he behaves, challenging what is socially acceptable.
