The conceptual and political limitations of constructive anger

Este artigo oferece uma análise da definição de raiva e sua instrumentalidade política, enquadrada na literatura cognitivista sobre emoções. Analiso a crítica de Martha Nussbaum (2016), que afirma que a raiva é contraprodutiva e que deve ser substituída por emoções positivas – o que eu chamo de ‘proposta de substituição’. Esse tratamento que desconsidera a raiva assume conotações prejudiciais quando direcionado a mulheres e pessoas negras, ao ressaltar estereótipos de gênero e raça. Em resposta a esse problema político, autoras como Myisha Cherry (2022) desenvolveram defesas da raiva, defendendo sua necessidade na luta contra o racismo e caracterizando-a como construtiva e positiva. No entanto, eu argumento que a defesa da raiva construtiva formulada por Cherry – chamada de ‘raiva Lordeana’ – se alinha com a proposta de Nussbaum, pois ambas, em última análise, defendem a regulação da raiva em uma forma de emoção positiva. Eu argumento que há uma lacuna nas defesas da instrumentalidade da raiva, as quais não estão focando em um elemento-chave da raiva que é politicamente controverso e, ao mesmo tempo, imperativo: a agressividade.
