Lulism in the 2022 Electoral Campaign

Abstract

Although the term “Lulism” is widely used in academic contexts, it is not commonly well-received when associated with the concept of populism. In this article, we seek to analyse Lulism as a form of populism, insofar as we highlight the enemy against which it positions itself antagonistically, and examine the construction of its notion of “the people” and its leader. Theoretically, we adopt a post-structuralist understanding of populism, grounded in Ernesto Laclau’s theory and the discourse theory developed by Ernesto Laclau and Chantal Mouffe. To carry out this investigation, we compiled materials from Lula’s 2022 presidential campaign. These data were subsequently processed using NVivo software through the technique of discourse analysis. As results, we firstly identified the signifier “anti-democracy” as the antagonistic consolidation to Lulism, serving as the pole around which unfulfilled demands are articulated and channelled through Lula’s leadership. Furthermore, we found “social inclusion”, “a government ‘with’ everyone”, “sensitivity and care”, and “democracy” to be the key signifiers structuring the Lulist discourse, shaping the meanings of its people and its leader, while negating the representation of its antagonist.
