Abstract

This article analyzes the relationship of the major newspapers in the state of Pará (the Liberal and Pará Daily) to state political class. Although business competitors, these communication vehicles may present a possible political alignment with traditional political of Pará. Thus, the political interests of those media elites, sometimes controlled or sponsored by local politicians, affect the content of the information transmitted to the population. In this scenario, small newspapers represent a relevant alternative information content allowing access to information of public interest is not so distorted by power games. From the theoretical perspective of the quality of democracy, the text strives to see how the major newspapers, and also small alternative print media, are positioned about the state policy and information brought to the public. Therefore, will be searched the foundation of the history of these newspapers and their relationship with the political class in the past and today.
