Influence of Fairtrade certification on the maintenance of youth in rural areas

The objective of this study is to examine young individuals' perceptions of the effects generated by Fairtrade certification on their retention in rural areas. A mixed methods research design was employed, encompassing both descriptive and exploratory approaches and involving young participants from various organizations certified by Fairtrade. The key findings highlight the significant impact of certification on recognizing and valorizing work in the agricultural sector, adding value to products, and ensuring fair pricing, which in turn contributes to income generation and financial autonomy among the youth. Additionally, the study reveals the positive influence of Fairtrade certification in empowering young individuals and fostering gender equality discussions, enabling them, including women, to actively participate in decision-making processes regarding family-owned properties. This study makes a significant contribution by proposing methodological instruments capable of comprehensively assessing the key factors that influence the retention of young individuals in rural areas, with a particular focus on the role of certifications targeted at supporting family farming.
