Abstract

Aim: to describe the epidemiological profile of children and adolescents with AIDS in Porto Alegre-RS. Methods: it is a descriptive epidemiological study with data from the information system of reportable diseases, provided by the unified Health System in the period of 1985 to 2012. Results: 1,300 cases have been reported, 1,221 children and 79 adolescents, 662 male and 638 female. The largest number of reported cases was observed in children under one year (n = 470), the type of cause that accounted for 87.2% of the notifications was the mother-to-child transmission affecting with higher prevalence children under one year to four years. Conclusion: the epidemiological profile of AIDS for age group of children under one year to 14 years was characterized by a gradual reduction of reported cases from 2003, in children and adolescents white male HIV infected by mother-to-child transmission.
