Abstract

The teaching case presents the hypothetical situation of a furniture company that faces financial difficulties resulting from an increasing market competition and inefficiency in operations management. A management consultant was hired to diagnose the situation of the company’s operations management and propose solutions that may improve its performance with the available resources. The case aims to facilitate the learning process of topics related to Operational Research, as linear programming and the theory of constraints. It encourages students to solve the business problem and suggest actions that help the company to overcome the situation. The case contributes to management education as it can be used to approximate a theoretical content - Theory of Constraints - and a technical troubleshooting - Linear Programming – to a business situation. Through the case students have the opportunity to discuss and solve a problem that portrays the situation of many industrial companies.

Douglas Wegner, Universidade de Santa Cruz do Sul (UNISC)

Possui graduação em Administração pela Universidade de Santa Cruz do Sul (2000), Mestrado em Administração pela Universidade Federal de Santa Maria (2005) e Doutorado em Administração pela Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul (2011), com período-sanduíche na Universität zu Köln (Alemanha). Atualmente é professor Adjunto do Mestrado Profissional em Administração da Universidade de Santa Cruz do Sul (UNISC). Revisor de artigos para o Enanpad, Eneo, 3Es e EnEPQ. Tem experiência na área de Administração, atuando principalmente nos seguintes temas: redes de empresas, arranjos organizacionais, cooperação empresarial e competitividade.
