Personality traits of project managers: differences in knowledge, experience, and business sector

Abstract

This study aims to verify if there is any difference in the personality traits of Project Managers with different professional backgrounds – training, experience, and business sector (public or private). Using as theoretical basis the Big Five personality traits, this research was conducted with 244 Project Managers who work in Brazil. The results of tests of mean differences between groups showed that Project Managers with more experience have the trait agreeableness more pronounced than managers with less experience, while Project Managers with more schooling have a higher Conscientiousness, Openness to Experience, and Emotional Stability than Managers with less schooling. Project Managers who work in the public and private sectors showed different personality traits between themselves, and only for agreeableness no significant difference was found. These findings may contribute to the targeting of selection and training policies and the development of interpersonal and technical skills for this professional.

Ralf Luis de Moura, Universidade Federal do Espirito Santo (UFES)

Possui graduação em Ciência da Computação , pós-graduação em Desenvolvimento de Sistemas em Java (UFES) e mestrado em Engenharia Elétrica pela Universidade Federal do Espírito Santo. Atualmente é doutorando em Administração na UFES, gerente de projetos de tecnologia na Vale S.A. e professor dos cursos superiores de Engenharia Elétrica, de Computação e de Controle e Automação, Sistemas de Informação e Tecnologia em Desenvolvimento de Sistemas, Redes de Computadores e Jogos Digitais nas Faculdades Integradas Espirito Santenses. Tem mais de 20 anos de experiência nas áreas de Eletrônica, Automação, Computação e Administração, atuando nas seguintes áreas: Eletrônica Industrial, Instrumentação e Automação, Redes de Computadores, Redes Industriais, Desenvolvimento de Softwares, Desenvolvimento WEB, Infraestrutura de TI, Computação em Nuvem, Governança de TI e Gerenciamento de Projetos. Possui várias certificações nas áreas técnicas e de gestão.

Teresa Cristina Janes Carneiro, Universidade Federal do Espirito Santo (UFES)

Doutorado em Administração (2005) e mestrado em Administração (1994) pelo Instituto COPPEAD/UFRJ. Graduação em Engenharia Civil pela UFES (1986). Profissional da área de Tecnologia da Informação entre 1982 e 1999. Pesquisadora nas áreas de Administração Financeira, Sistemas de Informação, Tecnologia e Inovação. Coordenadora do Mestrado Profissional em Gestão Pública da UFES (2011-2017). Coordenadora da UAB/UFES (a partir de 2012). Membro do Comitê Gestor e Coordenadora da Comissão Acadêmica Nacional do PROFIAP, Mestrado Profissional em Administração Pública em Rede Nacional (2013-2015). Membro da Comissão de Apoio à Gestão do Programa Nacional de Formação em Administração Pública - PNAP/UAB (2009-2014). Coordenadora do Curso de Graduação em Administração Modalidade a Distância, Projeto Piloto da UAB (2006-2012). Diretora Geral de Recursos Humanos da UFES (2010-2012). Possui graduação em Bacharelado em Matemática pela Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais (1986), graduação em Ciência da Computação pela Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais (1986), mestrado em Administração Pública pela Fundação João Pinheiro (1997) e doutorado em Computação Aplicada pelo Instituto Nacional de Pesquisas Espaciais (2007).Atualmente é professora Adjunto III da Universidade Federal do Espírito Santo (UFES) e suboordenadora do Mestrado Profissional de Gestão Pública da UFES (desde 2015). Professora e Pesquisadora do Mestrado de Gestão Publica (desde 2012) e do curso de Administração (desde 2010), nas linhas Geoinformação, Sistemas de infromação, TI e Gestão Acadêmica.È, membro do Comite Assessor da Fundação de Amparo à Pesquisa do Espírito Santo (Fapes) da área de Ciências Sociais Aplicadas. (desde 2013) E, foi coordenadora do curso de Administração da UFES (2012-2014) e subcoordenadora do curso de Administração na modalidade a Distância (EAD) da UFES (2011-2014), professora Adjunto III e membro do colegiado de Sistemas de Informação da Pontifícia Universidade Católica de Minas Gerais(2004-2010) e Superintendente de Projetos de Sistemas da Empresa de Informática e Informação do Município de Belo Horizonte(2008-2009).
