Does cancellation have a more frequent color? Barbosa, Simonal, Conká and the historical-racial dimensions of the phenomenon in contemporary times

Moacir Barbosa and Wilson Simonal were successful figures in Brazilian football and music, respectively, but their careers were marked and silenced by blame and accountability: the goalkeeper for the national team's defeat in the 1950 World Cup; the singer for being accused of collaborating with the military dictatorship. These cases exemplify the transition from celebrities and idols to villains, as both suffered boycotts and public shaming, remaining associated with these "failures" until the end of their lives. This article connects these cases to cancel culture through the episode experienced by Karol Conká on Big Brother Brasil, exploring how this phenomenon intersects with structural racism and the punishment of Black bodies. By examining these episodes, the goal is to understand how racial identity influences the selectivity, intensity, and permanence of cancellation.
