The impact of the lack of infrastructure on the socio-economic development of the Amazon region

There has been an intensification in the discourse surrounding the use of social technologies to advance biodiversity-based economic practices to fortify and promote traditional communities. However, most strategies have been designed to advance chains of production deemed of primary importance and/or of large scale, with little consideration to the specific needs of rural residents in the Amazon region. Socioeconomic studies have been demonstrated to effectively provide information on the potentialities and challenges traditional communities face in rural areas regarding productive activities development. This article assesses the context of 45 communities situated within the Amanã Sustainable Development Reserve in the state of Amazonas. The aim is to identify and discuss the difficulties encountered in the development and implementation of technologies designed to facilitate productive practices and commercialization in these territories. Quantitative data from 2021 were employed to evaluate the communities’ productive profiles and the accessibility of 14 items of community infrastructure. We tested the hypothesis that larger communities and those with greater access to infrastructure develop more productive practices. We identified multiple productive activities, those related to agricultural practices and fishing standing out. In addition, major limitations on access to community infrastructure items were observed. This points to a demand for technologies that can provide benefits to productive practices, as well as improvements in the population’s quality of life. Our results highlight the need for technologies adapted to rural Amazonian areas for the socioeconomic development of traditional populations who live in protected areas.
