The Role of Brazilian Sign Language (Libras) in ethnic-racial discussions: lexicon, terminology, and inclusion

Brazilian Sign Language (Libras) plays an essential role in the communication and expression of the Deaf community in Brazil, especially in the context of ethnic-racial discussions. This article explores the importance of Libras lexicon and terminology in facilitating meaningful debates about identity, racism, and cultural diversity. While lexicon covers all words available in a language, terminology refers to a specific set of words and concepts used in a specialized field. In the ethnic-racial context, the development of a lexicon and terminology in Libras involves the adaptation and creation of signs that represent concepts such as race, ethnicity, racial identity, racism and discrimination. Libras interpreters and experts in Sign Linguistics play a crucial role in this process, ensuring the accurate representation of the concepts under discussion. Furthermore, it is essential that ethnic-racial terminology in Libras is sensitive to the different perspectives within the Deaf community, recognizing the variety of ethnic experiences among Deaf people and as a product of the discussion, we present some terminological sheets (Libras and Portuguese) from the field of ethnic-racial discussions. Education and awareness are essential to promote the appropriate use of ethnic-racial terminology in Libras, both by the Deaf community and by interpreters and educators. The development and dissemination of an adequate lexicon and terminology for the field of ethno-racial discussions in Libras contribute not only to the inclusion and active participation of the Deaf community in these conversations, but also to a more inclusive society aware of ethnic-racial issues.
