Abstract

Waste disposal can contaminate surrounding surface waters. In this study, we analyzed physicochemical, microbiological (Escherichia coli and total coliforms), and toxicological (Allium cepa test) parameters of water samples collected from water sources upstream and downstream of five landfills and five dumps in Central Brazil, totaling 20 collection points. The parameters evaluated were associated with the use and occupation of the soil in the microbasins near the collection points. The physicochemical analysis showed that most of the points studied presented values outside those permitted by Brazilian legislation. The microbiological analysis showed contamination with total coliforms and E. coli at all collection points. The toxicological analysis revealed toxic potential in the surface waters of the collection points near the five landfills evaluated and two of the five dumps evaluated. The combination of the analyzed parameters revealed no significant differences between the areas of landfills and dumps and between waters upstream and downstream of solid waste deposits. The association with land use showed that urbanization contributes more to the worsening of surface water quality than the presence of landfills/dumps alone. Therefore, public policies need to be developed to promote the controlled growth of cities and constant monitoring of the quality of urban surface waters.
