Abstract

This article aims to present a survey on the extent of the flood occurring in Alegrete on 11/25/2009, which caused mudslides and floods in various districts of the city, causing damage to homes and public roads. With the aid of a GPS receiver, we collected 122 points where the water depth reached its peak, according to records of local residents in all districts affected. From there we constructed a map of flooding the date specified, using software with satellite imagery and manipulation of drawings. Through it, one can evaluate the total area affected and elaborate studies of structural and nonstructural flood hazard areas of the river Ibirapuitã in Alegrete, and make changes to the Master Plan of the municipality.
